A Federação Internacional de Futebol (Fifa) anunciou nesta sexta (15) que a escolha do país-sede da Copa do Mundo de futebol feminino de 2023 foi adiada para o dia 25 de junho. Inicialmente, a decisão do local da competição aconteceria no início de junho, na reunião do Conselho da Fifa em Adis Abeba (Etiópia).
Segundo a Fifa, agora a decisão será tomada por videoconferência. A causa da mudança foi o impacto da pandemia do novo coronavírus (covid-19).
O Brasil participa da disputa para sediar a competição, junto com Colômbia, Japão e da candidatura conjunta de Austrália e Nova Zelândia.
Segundo a secretária-geral da Fifa, a senegalesa Fatma Samoura, a entidade “continua comprometida com a implementação do processo de licitação mais abrangente, objetivo e transparente da história da Copa do Mundo feminina da Fifa. Isso faz parte do […] compromisso geral com o futebol feminino que, entre outras coisas, verá a Fifa investir US$ 1 bilhão no futebol feminino durante o ciclo atual”.
